D&D

everything dungeons and dragons

how do i play dnd?

here's how to play dnd: you tell the game master - or 'GM' - what you want your character to do. then the GM tells you if it happens.

at the end of the day, it's that simple.

obviously there's more to it

all right, yeah, you got me. there's a bit more to it than that.

first off, the dice. you see people rolling them, but what are they for? well, in the world of dnd, whenever you try to do something with an element of uncertainty to it, you roll a 20 sided die to see if you succeed or fail.

this 20 sided die - or 'd20' - is the big one to know about. he covers nearly everything you'll want to do.

here's an example of what happens:

  1. your GM tells you that your character is in front of a door.
  2. your character wants to open the door, but the door is stuck shut.
  3. your GM will tell you to roll an 'strength check' to bust the door down.
  4. you roll your d20. whatever number you rolled, you add your 'strength' modifier to it. the final number is your 'strength check'.
  5. the GM tells you if the number you rolled is high enough to beat the check.
  6. if you rolled high, you bust down the door! but if you rolled low, the door stays shut.

dnd is full of checks like this. when building your first character, you'll learn more about 'strength modifiers' and the numbers associated with your skills. that's how you'll know what number to add to each check.
